Man shoots at 2 San Francisco Bay Area officers

Associated Press |

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) — Police are searching for a man who fired shots at two San Francisco Bay Area officers.

KNTV (http://bit.ly/1HimgK1 ) reports that the South San Francisco police officers returned fire about 3 a.m. Thursday in a neighborhood. The officers weren’t injured.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the suspect was shot, and police were searching for him hours later in the neighborhood. Officials advised residents to stay inside.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions nationwide over the killings of unarmed black men by white officers in Missouri and New York and subsequent attacks on police.

This week in Los Angeles, two officers came under fire, initially stirring concerns they had been ambushed days after two New York City officers were killed. But an investigation found the LAPD officers drove into gang-related gunfire Sunday.

Putin calls annexation of Crimea a historic landmark

Putin calls annexation of Crimea a historic landmark

Associated Press |

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has used his New Year’s speech to hail his country’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula as an achievement that will “forever remain a landmark in the national history.”

Putin’s comment in his pre-recorded annual address on Wednesday already has been broadcast in Russia’s far eastern regions, where the holiday was celebrated hours ahead of Moscow, given the time difference.

The Kremlin also published several dozen New Year’s messages that Putin has sent to heads of state and international organizations, including one to President Barack Obama.

Putin reminded Obama of the upcoming 70th anniversary of the allied victory in World War II, and said that should serve as a reminder of “the responsibility that Russia and the United States bear for maintaining peace and international stability.” Moscow is anxious for those bilateral relations to advance, but only as long as there is “equality and mutual respect.”

After Ukraine’s former Russia-friendly president was driven from power in February, Moscow sent troops to overtake Crimea, home to a Russian naval base. Those forces blocked Ukrainian military garrisons and set the stage for a hastily called referendum on Crimea joining Russia, which Ukraine and the West rejected as illegal.

The West has imposed crippling sanctions against Russia over the annexation of Crimea and Moscow’s support for a pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting between the government troops and the rebels has killed more than 4,700 since April.

Under the combined blow of the sanctions and slumping oil prices, the Russian ruble has lost about half its value this year and the national economy has drifted into recession. Putin has promised that the economy will rebound in two years, but he has failed to offer a specific plan for easing Russia’s heavy dependence on oil and gas revenues.

In his speech, Putin praised Crimea’s “return home,” a view widely backed by many Russians who saw Ukraine’s control over the Black Sea region a historic injustice. Crimea only became part of Ukraine when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave the peninsula to his native land in 1954. That mattered little until the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 and Crimea ended up in an independent Ukraine.

Experts have warned that Putin’s popularity, which soared after the annexation of Crimea, could fizzle quickly amid his nation’s economic downturn. But the Russian leader refrained from directly referring to Russia’s economic woes in his New Year address, praising his citizens for their readiness to stay united “both in days of triumphs and at a time of trials” and to maintain their “unity and solidarity.”

All NC counties dropped unemployment rates over year, but jobs still not at …

Many North Carolina counties are seeing steady drops in their unemployment rates, while a fifth of the counties saw unemployment rates climb in November from the prior month, according to county-level jobs numbers released by the N.C. Commerce Department’s Labor and Economics Division.

This month’s results (scroll down to see county rankings) show that all 100 counties lowered their unemployment rates over the last year. Two counties — Graham and Scotland – had unemployment rates over 10 percent, while

But there’s still a gap in most of the state from where local economics were before the nation’s Great Recession began in early 2008.

Two-thirds of North Carolina 100 counties in North Carolina had unemployed people now than they had in December 2007, and 67 counties also had smaller labor forces.

(The state overall had 246,318 unemployed people in November 2014, an increase of 34,482 from December 2007 levels. The labor force, however, has grown from 4.5 million in Dec. 2007 to 4.62 million in November 2014.)

This chart (which has data through Oct. 2014 and hasn’t been updated to include today’s data) from the N.C. Budget and Tax Center shows that 15 counties in the state have seen drops of higher than 10 percent of the number of people employed in counties. (Note: Both N.C. Policy Watch and the Budget and Tax Center are part of the N.C. Justice Center, an anti-poverty non-profit).

BTCemploymentchart

Jobs data for November 2014 shows that the state, as a whole, had 25,373 more people working now than it did a year ago. Unemployment rolls also dropped in that time period by nearly 80,000, and several economists say that gap is caused in large party by “missing workers” that exited the labor force after struggling and not finding work.

One word of caution: county unemployment estimates are based on non-seasonally adjusted figures, meaning areas that see large amounts of seasonal employment (coastal areas with robust summer tourism economies, agricultural areas) experience routine spikes in unemployment during off-seasons.

Chatham County on the edge of the Research Triangle had the lowest unemployment rate in November, at 3.7 percent.

Graham County, a sparsely populated mountain county on the western edge of North Carolina, led the state in unemployment with 11.4 percent of its labor force out-of-work.

The county’s largest employer, Stanley Furniture, shut down a Robbinsville factory this summer making children’s furniture and employing 400 people in an area that already among the highest unemployment rates in the state.

Lumber company Oak Valley Hardwoods recently announced it bought the former furniture plant and plans on bring 114 jobs back to Graham County.

The company hasn’t said when it will begin renovating the plant, or begin hiring, according to an article earlier this month from the Carolina Public Press.

One Maine town is counted among America’s 19 ‘most beautiful’

I knew once I came across a listicle on the lifestyle website Impulcity a few weeks back it would join the likes of Travel + Leisure, Buzzfeed and Forbes as an inexhaustible reservoir of material for our #Maine blog.

I’ve already shared Impulcity lists showing off Maine’s strangest abandoned site and noting which of our towns is one of the country’s most festive Christmas destinations.

Now, Impulcity has ranked what it considers the “19 Most Beautiful Small Towns in America,” and you know a list like that is sure to have a Maine town on it.

Any guesses?

Well, if you said, “Camden,” you were right.

Impulcity places Camden at No. 5, right behind No. 4 Asheville, North Carolina, and ahead of No. 6 Chautauqua, New York. The chart topper on the list at No. 1 is Beaufort, South Carolina, followed by Holland, Michigan. Rounding out the group at No. 19 is Marietta, Ohio.

The other New England towns to make the cut are No. 7 Woods Hole and No. 18 Edgartown, both in Massachusetts.

Impulcity describes Camden with the following post:

What’s that? You don’t think there’s a reason to go visit Maine? That’s cute. The truth is that you couldn’t be more wrong. Bay towns like Camden provide plenty of entertainment for any traveler looking to explore a region of the country that they never thought they’d visit. Sure, the winters can be pretty brutal at times, but that just makes the winters all the better. Instead of frying in the summer heat in August, you can take a peaceful, temperate stroll down one of the main streets.

While it might get a little nippy at times, early to mid fall is the best time to enjoy this spot. The fall colors form the perfect backdrop to the small town canopy that’s already flourishing with tiny, local shops and plenty of little restaurants that are filled with local fare of all types. There’s something truly special about watching the fog roll off of the bay, surrounded by ships.

For all of the truth included in that blurb, the lead-in assumption that readers may never have considered visiting Maine is a little off. While Maine isn’t as well-known a tourist destination as Florida or California, places like Portland, Camden and Kennebunkport have been getting smothered by online superlatives imploring people to visit here for about five years now. And tourism remains one of Maine’s top industries.

Maine is only still a secret to travelers who don’t have access to the Internet.

For those of you do, here’s another video showing off one of Camden’s biggest winter draws, the U.S. National Toboggan Championships:

Outgoing justice returning to NC Court of Appeals

The state estimates that on any given day, more than 3,000 people illegally pass a stopped school bus. WNCN Investigates found that if buses are on the road for about 250 days of the year, on average drivers pass a stopped school bus more than 750,000 times each year.

But only 1,322 people were charged with passing a stopped school bus during the 2013-14 fiscal year, meaning less than 1 percent of drivers who pass stopped school buses are prosecuted.

Judge denies motions to move, delay Tsarnaev trial

Associated Press |

BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge has denied requests by lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) to move his trial out of state and to delay its start.

U.S. District Court Judge George O’Toole Jr. issued his denials Wednesday and said explanations will be issued later in the day.

Jury selection in Tsarnaev’s trial is scheduled to start Monday.

Defense lawyers said it would be impossible to find an impartial jury in Massachusetts given the massive amounts of publicity the case has received. They also said the trial should be delayed so they could better prepare.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges connected to the April 2013 explosions at the finish line that killed three and injured more than 260. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

Tourism booms for Asheville in 2014

Asheville tourism officials say business was booming this year, and developers are continuing to add hotel rooms.

The Citizen-Times in Asheville reports that for the year, hotel-occupancy rates through November stood at 69 percent, several percentage points higher than the previous year.

Marla Tambellini, deputy director for the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau tells the newspaper that 2014 is on track to be a record year.

The boost is at least partly due to $4 million the bureau has spent on advertising this year.

And developers are banking on the continued growth of tourism. Several projects currently under way will add hundreds of hotel rooms to the city.
