BIRMINGHAM, Ala. and BATON ROUGE, La. and RALEIGH, N.C. and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Five biopharmaceutical research organizations with operations in Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Raleigh and Research Triangle Park have formed a new public-private partnership called the Southern Biologics Network (SBN) to create biologics faster and less expensively.

The five research organizations will work together to create advanced biologics for biopharmaceutical companies of all sizes.

Biologics are genetically engineered proteins from plant, animal and human cells. They’ll be used to create therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics and drug targets to treat and prevent diseases, assist in drug discovery, and improve the lives of tens of thousands of patients across the United States.

The five research organizations are:

  • Birmingham-based Southern Research Institute, which has created seven FDA-approved cancer drugs. Scientists there are discovering and developing treatments in multiple disease areas including oncology, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and infectious diseases.
  • Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge is at the forefront of medical discovery on understanding and combatting obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, and other chronic diseases with the goal of improving human health across the lifespan.
  • The Center for Structural Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is a leading structural biology research center providing scientists with biophysical and structural information on protein and protein/drug complexes.
  • ProteoVec, Inc., in Baton Rouge, Raleigh and RTP. PV’s scientists develop and scale biologics production processes earlier in development, and more cost effectively, than previously possible.
  • Soluble Therapeutics, Inc., in Birmingham can determine optimized formulations that maximize solubility and stability for protein-based therapeutics in less than 60 days.

Biologics have revolutionized the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and different types of cancers. Development of new biosimilar versions of existing breakthrough biologics are key to making healthcare more affordable and improving outcomes.

Pharmaceutical Companies Will Bring More Life-Saving Treatments to Market by Using SBN’s Services

SBN is the first organization in the Southeastern United States to provide truly comprehensive biologic development services. Pharmaceutical companies will be able to save time and money because they’ll be able to select one organization, SBN, instead of trying to coordinate the work of several biopharmaceutical research firms for the manufacture, discovery, preclinical development, and early-stage clinical development of biologics.

“More affordable production and more mature early-stage process development will lead to a greater number of breakthroughs making it to market,” said ProteoVec CEO Michael Crapanzano, M.D. “Not only does that save time; that saves money, too.”

That’s a significant point of difference, considering the business risks and costs of drug development. According to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, it can take up to 15 years to create an FDA-approved drug. Research and development costs can exceed $1 billion, and only 20 percent of marketed drugs break even or turn a profit. Still, medicine can make a huge difference. Since 1980, 83 percent of life expectancy gains for cancer patients can be attributed to new treatments. The HIV/AIDS death rate has dropped more than 80 percent since the use of antiretroviral treatments in 1995.

“SBN combines some of the brightest minds in biologics, helps reduce the risk that pharmaceutical companies take at the earliest stages of biologics discovery and development, and allows our five entities to work together more efficiently with clients to do what we all do best — create biological therapeutics for our customers that will dramatically improve patients’ lives,” said Art Tipton, Ph.D., president and CEO of Southern Research Institute.

“We are excited to be part of this network, since we have many of the components necessary to quickly advance high value drug targets using our expertise in protein characterization, target validation, and the ability to optimize preclinical candidates for clients,” explained Dr. Larry DeLucas, director of the Center for Structural Biology at UAB.

About the Southern Biologics Network

Southern Biologics Network service offerings include: initial characterization of protein structures and protein-drug interactions; protein expression, purification and formulation; preclinical in-vitro/in-vivo IND enabling studies; and Phase I clinical studies. SBN’s customer service focus includes close consulting and assistance in the design and execution of all aspects of early-stage biologic development using cost effective, creative, and customized approaches. RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Imagine downloading 25 songs in less than a second, before you can even crank up the volume. Imagine loading your favorite HD movie in less than 36 seconds, a fraction of the time it takes to pick which movie to watch. It’s now a reality for qualifying residents and small businesses with today’s launch of U-verse with ATT* GigaPower in Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Winston-Salem.**

The selection of these cities for the all-fiber ATT GigaPower network stemmed from an agreement with the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative. NCNGN is comprised of six municipalities, four leading universities and local business leaders working to encourage development of high-speed Internet networks across the state.

The ATT GigaPower network provides customers access to the fastest Internet available from ATT, featuring speeds up to 1 gigabit per second.*** Whether customers are connecting to the cloud, videoconferencing, online gaming or other services, ultra-fast Internet access will improve the customer experience.

U-verse with ATT GigaPower customers will also have access to cutting-edge TV services.  This includes the ability to watch and record five simultaneous HD streams and ATT’s largest storage capacity DVR capable of storing up to 900 hours of SD or 330 hours of HD programming. Customers can also watch more than 100 live channels in and out of home, watch video on-demand TV shows and schedule DVR recordings, on more than 30 smartphones and tablets through the ATT U-verse app.

“The Research Triangle has a long history as a technology innovator,” said Tracy Futhey, vice president for Information Technology at Duke University and chair of the North Carolina Next Generation Network Steering Committee. “Maintaining that pace-setting role requires a continual evolution of our tech ecosystem. We’re thrilled ATT is investing in a gigabit network in our region. These kinds of networks will help to strengthen our region’s competitive edge, ensuring that we continue to lead in creating an environment that inspires technological innovation.”

Consumers in eligible areas have several choices of Internet speeds and bundling offers on the ATT GigaPower network, with speeds up to 100 Mbps starting as low as $90 per month. Residential customers can upgrade their speed to up to 1Gbps, add TV or add a home phone for an additional $30 a month per service.**** More information can be found at att.com/gigapower.

“We’re proud to launch in these cities as the first locations where we will offer ultra-high speeds to local consumers and employers in North Carolina,” said Venessa Harrison, president ATT North Carolina. “U-verse with ATT GigaPower will help encourage economic development in the area by facilitating a new wave of innovation through enhanced opportunities for education, health, research and small business growth.”

ATT has also announced plans to launch ATT GigaPower in additional areas and expand the availability of the network in Charlotte, Durham and Greensboro. As part of the agreement with the NCNGN, Durham residents and small businesses will receive ATT U-verse Internet connectivity and U-verse TV services for the first time. Specific timing of availability for these markets will be announced at a later date.

In April, ATT announced a major initiative to expand ATT GigaPower  to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 markets nationwide. With today’s announcement, U-verse with ATT GigaPower is now available to consumers and small businesses in parts of the Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem markets. ATT previously announced plans to deliver ATT GigaPower in parts of 12 markets identified in April – Atlanta; Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Chicago; Cupertino, Calif.; Houston; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; Overland Park, Kan.; St. Louis and San Antonio.

Additionally, ATT has committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the ATT GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above what the company announced in April.

President Obama’s proposal in early November to regulate the entire Internet under rules from the 1930s designed for voice services injects significant uncertainty into the economics underlying ATT’s investment decisions.  As a result, the company has paused consideration of any fiber investments that would go beyond its DIRECTV merger-related commitments, which includes previously announced fiber plans described above, until the rules are clarified.

ATT has served the state of North Carolina for 135 years and employs more than 6,700 people across the state.

With holiday supplies already covering the store shelves, individuals, families, churches and groups in and around Breckenridge are working to make Christmas a reality for kids in need around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement. Especially during November, Operation Christmas Child is moving into high gear while Breckenridge-area volunteers prepare to collect 12,000 gift-filled shoeboxes during National Collection Week, Nov.17–24.
The Breckenridge Collection site will be the Church of Breckenridge at 405 Sunset. Pickup times are: 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 17-21; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22; 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23; and 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Nov. 24.
At the Church of Breckenridge, for example, anyone can drop off a gift-filled shoebox to send to a child overseas. On arrival, using whatever means necessary—trucks, trains, boats, bikes and even elephants—the shoebox gifts will then be hand-delivered to children worldwide. For many children, this shoebox gift will be the first gift they have ever received. A full list of collection locations can be found online. Though the shoebox gifts will often travel thousands of miles, using special tracking technology, participants can follow their boxes online and discover the country to which their gifts will be delivered to children in need. To register a shoebox gift, use the online donation form at samaritanspurse.org.
Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 113 million shoebox gifts to suffering children in more than 150 countries since 1993, and hopes to collect another 9.9 million gift-filled shoeboxes in 2014. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham.
For more information about how to participate in Operation Christmas Child, call 800-353-5949 or visit samaritanspurse.org. National Collection Week for gift-filled shoeboxes is Nov. 17-24; however, shoebox gifts are collected all year at the Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Boone, N.C. Participants can also build a shoebox through an online tool offering a personalized and convenient way to send a gift to a child in one of the hardest-to-reach countries.

Gators to play Jan. 3 in Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina

GAINESVILLE – The Florida Gators were victims of an offensive onslaught during their last visit to the state of Alabama.

But since a 42-21 loss Sept. 20 in Tuscaloosa against coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide, the Gators’ defense has rebounded to become one of the nation’s top units.

The Gators now return to Alabama to test themselves against another high-powered offense on Jan. 3, when UF faces East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in storied Legion Field.

Led by senior quarterback Shane Carden, the Pirates are second nationally in passing (367.3 ypg) and 15th in scoring (37.2 ppg). Carden averages 359.1 yards passing has thrown for 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Behind 438 yards and four touchdowns by Carden, ECU routed North Carolina 70-41 the same day the Gators gave up a school-record 672 yards to Alabama, including touchdown passes of 87 and 79 yards.

UF’s “D” bounced back from the embarrassing performance and now ranks No. 9 nationally in total defense, including No. 23 against the pass.

“Our guys are ready to get back on the field to begin preparation to face a very good ECU team,” UF interim head coach D.J. Durkin said in a press release on the school’s Web site.

East Carolina (8-4) is coming off a crushing 32-30 defeat Thursday night at home against UCF. The Knights completed a 51-yard  Hail Mary for a touchdown to end the game.

Entering the fourth quarter trailing 26-9, Carden threw three touchdown passes to give East Carolina a four-point lead with 2:17 remaining. Questionable clock management by the Pirates ultimately gave the Knights the ball and a chance to pull off the dramatic win.

The Gators fell 24-19 Nov. 29 at FSU during their final game, and the last game of coach Will Muschamp. UF intercepted four passes from Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston, who finished with a career-worst 87.9 passer rating.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of playing Florida, a program rich in tradition out of a conference which has our highest respect,” fifth-year ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill said. “We are excited to have another opportunity to accomplish something special for this senior class, especially against a team the caliber of the Gators.”

The Gators won the two teams’ only meeting, 24-17 in 1983 as the nation’s sixth-ranked team. The schools are scheduled to play again Sept. 12 in the Swamp

The September game will be the Gators’ second under new head coach Jim McElwan.

McElwain was introduced on Saturday and said he will have a message for his players when he meets them Monday morning.

“Embrace what they’re doing, you’re Gators, let’s go win a bowl game,” McElwain said.
McElwain planned to hit the road recruiting after he meets the team. The Gators lost two pledges Saturday – quarterback Sheriron Jones and offensive lineman George Brown – and have just seven commitments in the SEC’s lowest-rated class.

“We’ll hit the road next week, get to as many places as humanly possible from the recruiting standpoint, because that’s one of those things, ‘recruit daily or die,'” McElwain said. “We’ve got to make sure we secure a great class.”

But while McElwain begins to rebuild the Gators, he said he wants his team to prepare for a positive bowl experience a season after UF failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since the 1990 season.

When asked what he planned to do during the game McElwain joked he plans to kick back and maybe grill out with outgoing UF president Bernie Machen.

“Eating popcorn. I’m gonna see what the normal guy does,” he said. “Maybe we’ll go tailgating, can we do that Bernie? Can we go set up a grill?”

Kings Announces February 2015 Opening

The fourth Kings Bowl America location is set to open in Burlington and it will be the largest Kings venue in Massachusetts.

Patrick Lyons announced Friday the opening of his fourth Massachusetts Kings Bowl America location in the newly established 3rd Ave. development at Northwest Park in Burlington, Massachusetts. This will be the largest Kings venue in MA, at 30,000 square feet and with a holding capacity of 700. These award-winning venues have established themselves as a popular destination for exceptional dining and entertainment in Greater Boston and beyond, with locations in Boston’s Back Bay, Legacy Place in Dedham, and Market Street in Lynnfield. Kings also has locations in Chicago, IL, Orlando, FL and Raleigh, NC.

Kings Burlington was due to open their doors in April 2014, but suffered a devastating fire, which destroyed the venue within hours, one day before orientation for the 200+ new employees. “We are thankful to the Burlington Fire Department along with other local departments for their rapid response and we are most thankful that no one was hurt. We are fortunate to place all the staff that are able to relocate in our other venues in our company. We will rebuild and hope to be open within a year,” Patrick Lyons said in a statement the following day. And now, less than a year later, Kings Burlington is here. The dedication and hard work put into this rebuild will be showcased when they open their doors.

The newest Kings features a luxe “Private Screening Room,” that holds up to 60 patrons in a stadium-style mini-auditorium. The Burlington location will also feature the “Kings Court,” a private Billiards and Game room that will feature several “Low Tech” table games as well as 20 high tech bowling lanes and two private bowling suites. Kings Burlington will also introduce an all new “X-press Lunch Menu,” catering to local businesses and patron’s on-the-go. Daily deals include a featured pizza, sandwich or burger of the day with a side and a drink for only $7.99. With a full service restaurant and patio, billiards and shuffleboard tables, Kings also features two full-service cafes and several private bowling rooms. Throughout the facility, there will be wall-to-wall, oversized HDTVs and a state-of-the-art sound system.

Kings Burlington is committed to being an actively engaged member of the Burlington community and has pledged to work with community-based initiatives in an effort to raise money through “fun-raisers” and direct donations. Kings has already participated in several philanthropic ventures, having hosted and raised millions of dollars for local charities, backed by popular celebrities and athletes, including Celtics’ Captain Rajon Rondo, Patriots’ linebacker Jerod Mayo, and legendary quarterback Doug Flutie. “Kings Cares” will be pledging its first show of support in Burlington with a community-wide fundraiser, benefitting eight local Burlington Charities in February 2015 on the first week they open, donating the entire venue, food, drinks, and staff service in an effort to raise money.

What’s on the Menu?

The full-service Kings restaurant will serve an extensive menu of award-winning American classics and comfort food, made with fresh, seasonal, and—whenever possible—local ingredients. The latest menu is an all-time best from Kings’ executive chef Andre Bautista. This new menu features healthier options and caters to dietary restrictions, with gluten-free pizza dough and rolls. Kings serves lunch, dinner, late night fare, and an impressive craft beer and specialty cocktails list.

The menu features appetizer favorites like Fried Mac Cheese Bites, Buffalo Wontons, and Kings’ Award Winning Famous Baked Wings. There is a large selection of Salads, Hand Tossed Pizzas, Wraps, Sandwiches and Flat Top Cooked Burgers.

Entrees include Pan Seared Citrus Salmon with Brown Rice Grilled Asparagus, House Smoked Baby Back Ribs, with Fries, Coleslaw and Cornbread, and Maple Glazed Pan Seared Sea Scallops.

Desserts include a selection of creative sundaes ‘sized for sharing’ and a special Fountain Shoppe menu of nostalgic favorites like Wicked Awesome Milkshakes, Ice Cream Floats, and Raspberry Lime Rickeys.

The taste of nostalgia carries over onto the cocktail list, with drinks like a Strawberry Pop Rocktini, rimmed with Pop Rocks; Strawberry Peach Lemonade; and the popular Asian Pear Martini.

Beer aficionados will approve of the ice cold selection of local craft, seasonal and imported beers along with the favorite domestic selections of beers featured at Kings. Patrons can enjoy a frosty pint or the KINGS-sized 32oz. Mug.

Events Parties at Kings

In addition to food and entertainment, Kings is well-known for its special events and parties. The venue boasts multiple private bowling and meeting spaces complemented by state-of-the-art audio and visual capabilities. Three private party spaces can accommodate up to 48, 64 and 200 people, respectively. Partygoers can bowl while enjoying an assortment of upscale culinary delights served right at the lanes, as well as “best-in-industry” service that have made Kings a favorite function destination in Greater Boston, Raleigh, Chicago and Orlando. Birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, kids’ parties, and corporate team building events become memorable with the unique combination of entertainment, food and top-notch service that has given Kings “Best of Boston” accolades nearly every year for the past 11 years.

Kings first opened its doors in 2003 in Boston’s Back Bay. Each Kings location features upscale, retro-inspired décor and executive-chef designed menus brought to life by “best-in-industry” service. With varied entertainment options, themed nights, and state-of-the-art audio visual equipment, Kings sets itself apart as an unparalleled destination for all occasions: family outing, date night hotspot, social gathering, sports viewing or corporate event. With its innovative staff and attentive service, Kings has established a national brand as the “go-to” choice for fun, food and entertainment, all under one roof.

Kings currently has six locations besides Burlington–Boston, Dedham, and Lynnfield Massachusetts, along with Chicago IL, Orlando FL, and Raleigh NC. Visit Kings online at www.kingsbowlamerica.com and at these current locations.

Syracuse football recruiting: Long snapper Matt Keller verbally commits after …

Syracuse, N.Y. — Penn Manor (Millersville, Pa.) High School senior long snapper Matt Keller has verbally committed to Syracuse after taking an official visit this weekend. Mike McAllister of Scout.com first reported the news.

“The combination of coaching staff, academics and the level of football that they’re playing is incredible,” Keller said. “I think it’s unmatched.”

Keller, who stands at 6 feet and weighs 225 pounds, becomes the Orange’s 25th verbal commitment in the Class of 2015, counting 2014 holdover cornerbacks Lamar Dawson and Treevon Prater. His only offer was from the Orange, though North Carolina, Louisville and Texas Tech were all showing interest.

Keller will enroll in January and said he expects to compete for the starting job next season. With SU senior long snapper Sam Rodgers set to graduate, the Orange will also return walk-on redshirt sophomore Keith Mitsuuchi and walk-on true freshman Nathan Hines at the position.

Keller noted that the coaching staff’s honesty was refreshing and made an impression on him throughout his recruitment. Orange defensive line coach Tim Daoust visited Keller last spring and kicking coach Chris Gould has maintained contact since.

Keller is ranked the No. 1 long snapper in the country by Kohl’s Kicking.
