The Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine is getting new, seasonal nonstop service from ViaAir — the second carrier to offer passenger service to the airport this year.
The service, between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and St. Augustine, will begin on Dec. 19. The 30-seat Embraer EMB-120 aircraft will fly on select dates through Jan. 20.
The flight is a big deal because it helps connect Northeast Florida to a big banking city, helping efforts to expand that industry here.
“Expanding passenger service at our regional airport will continue to benefit our economic development and tourism efforts by providing direct access to new markets,” said Melissa Glasgow, director of economic development for St. Johns County, in an email to the Business Journal. “Charlotte, NC, is a hub for banking and associated financial activity and that industry is a designated target industry for not only St. Johns County, but the Northeast Florida region as a whole. Any additional awareness created by that direct market access is beneficial to our collective economic development efforts.”
The new flight will also help bolster tourism in the area, the head of the airport said.
“ViaAir will offer our community a new flight option during the busy holiday season,” said Ed Wuellner, executive director of the airport authority for St. Augustine – St. Johns County, in a statement. “The new service will help attract new tourists to the region, while creating a more affordable and more comfortable option for local travelers.”
