Peter Givens

Role: Interpretive specialist for the Blue Ridge Parkway based in Vinton, he helped update and demythologize what visitors learn about Appalachian history while touring the 469-mile parkway from Virginia to North Carolina.

Age: 61

Education: Undergraduate degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College and a master’s in history from Western Carolina University.

Career: An employee of the National Park Service for nearly 35 years, he worked at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky and Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico and Cowpens National Battlefield in South Carolina before coming to Vinton to work for the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1989.

Family: Married to Carole Givens for 39 years. They have two adult sons.

What’s next: Teaching Appalachian history and American history at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.

A black bear staring at him across Rock Castle Creek. A dead deer with its hindquarters sticking out of the smashed windshield of a car, whose driver was badly shaken but unhurt. Thirsty Appalachian Trail hikers taking a shortcut to the Peaks of Otter. Fiddlers and banjo players putting on a bluegrass music concert.
