The Morehead City Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Christmas Break Holiday Camp for children ages K-8 on Dec. 29, 30, 31, and Jan. 2. Camp hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a cost of $15 per day. Campers will need to come with lunch each day. Children grades 2-6 are invited to spend their break at the aquarium, 1 Roosevelt Blvd., for N.C. Aquarium Holiday Camps, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 29-31. Participants will enjoy outdoor explorations during hikes on the nature trail, aquarium tours, attend behind the scenes animal encounters and feedings, talk with the aquarium staff about animal care and other fun and educational activities.

Environmental awareness and art are blended at the Scrap Exchange held at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, 1 Roosevelt Blvd., from 12-4 p.m. Dec. 30. Children will make a masterpiece from paper, plastic, packaging, containers, corks, candles, beads and fabric bits that would otherwise go to a landfill. Fort Macon State Park, 2303 East Fort Macon Road, will ring in the New Year with a bang with the help of three 32-pounder cannons during a special night firing demonstration. The canons will be fired at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 to coincide with midnight in Greenwich, England, where all other time zones are set. Because the cannons shoot across the park road, the park gate will be closed for safety at 6:55 p.m. and no one will be allowed in or out until the program concludes at 7:30 p.m. Come early, dress for the weather, and feel free to bring a small camp or beach chair. The 2015 Penguin Plunge will get participants splashing into the chilly waters of the Atlantic at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day. Donations to participate go to the Carteret County Humane Society. Minimum donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children. A donation of $20 includes a t-shirt, and a donation of $35 includes a sweatshirt. A limited number of Penguin Plunge towels are available for $30.

From now until Jan. 24, Onslow County Parks and Recreation in accepting registration for teams to join their 2015 Adult Church Basketball League. Cost is $375 per team and $10 per player.
