Big crowds in the NC mountains for MLK weekend

Banner Elk, NC (WBTV) –

The sun was shining and temperatures were in the 40s across the North Carolina Mountains on Monday.

“Just perfect,” said one man who had come up to the mountains with his family from Charlotte for the day. They were not alone.

At the Beech Mountain sledding hill, kids lined up to slide down while parents lined on on hay bales down below. Workers there said it was that busy all day and even more so over the weekend.

The Martin Luther King holiday weekend is normally one of the busiest weekends for winter tourism every year. This year was no different, said officials, thanks to enough cold weather to make plenty of snow.

Ski areas got a major boost when the rainy and foggy weather cleared out on Friday just in time for the weekend.

Thousands of seasonal jobs in the mountains depend on the holiday weekends to be strong and officials said this one did not disappoint.

With Winterfest celebrations in Blowing Rock this weekend, and the President’s Day weekend coming up in February, people in the tourism business say there is still a lot of winter work left before the season is over.
