Orchard Park, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills don’t have a new quarterback just yet.
A few hours after the team announced it was hosting former Buccaneers and Bears quarterback Josh McCown on a free-agent visit, the 35-year-old left without a contract, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News.
McCown and the Bills reportedly didn’t talk contract numbers. The veteran still has at least one visit lined up with another team.
After being the most sought-after quarterback on the free-agent market last offseason, McCown lasted just one year in Tampa Bay and the Buccaneers released him shortly after the season. He completed 56 percent of his passes for just over 2,200 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 11 games with Tampa Bay. The year before with the Chicago Bears, McCown played eight games, completed 66 percent of his passes and threw for just over 1,800 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns and one interception.
At this point, McCown is gauging his worth before unrestricted free agency opens on March 10 and other quarterbacks hit the open market. According to Carucci, McCown is open to competing for a starting job or being a backup. Right now, EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel are the only quarterbacks the Bills have under contract, and general manager Doug Whaley has stressed the need to bring in competition this offseason.
