Camellia Society flower show set for White Home

The 35th annual Charlotte Camellia Society flower show and plant sale will be held in Rock Hill 1-5 p.m. March 14-15 at the historic White Home, 258 White St. The event is free and open to the public.

Visitors can see the winners of the society’s annual camellia competition, buy flowers and to register for a drawing to win a free camellia.

Camellias are native to Asia but have been part of the Southern landscape since the early 19th century. For more information, call Caroline Dejesus at 704-609-4888.

▪ The Woman’s Club of Rock Hill Spring Luncheon and Garden Tour will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. April 18 at the clubhouse, 607 Aiken Ave. Lunch includes a buffet of salads, sandwiches, homemade desserts and drinks. ▪ The choirs of historic St. Paul Halsellville Baptist Church will hold a concert 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday on the campus of Brainerd Institute at Marquis and Lancaster streets in Chester. Hymn choir director Eumon Chisholm Jr. will lead the choirs in a performance in the style of traditional black congregational hymn singing, which began in 17th century America with slaves who brought African rhythms and melodies to the colonies.

▪ The 2015 St. Patrick’s Day on Main Festival will be 4:30-9:30 p.m. March 17 in downtown Rock Hill.

The festival will kick off with a lone bagpiper and features live music from the Federal Clan Kings and Carolina Ceili, an Irish/Celtic folk band from Asheville, Irish dancers from Walsh Kelley School of Irish Dancing and Rince na h’Eireann Dance School of Traditional Irish Dance, arts crafts vendors, a large amusement area for children and food and beverages. ▪ The Stellie J. Jackson Enrichment Center of Clover will sponsor a two-day fundraiser called Another Man’s Treasure, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Larne Building on Main Street in downtown Clover. Household items such as tools, toys, books, shoes and more will be sold. Proceeds will benefit the the center, which helps children through after-school and summer programs.

▪ The Mount Hebron Dreamkeepers Optimist Club is organizing the second annual York County Community All-Stars Comedy basketball show versus the Harlem Ambassadors team, 5 p.m. Saturday at South Pointe High School.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and those 60 or older. For $100, patrons get five tickets and a Success for Teens book with the “Slight Edge Principles.” Corporate sponsorships are available.

Proceeds support the “YES” – Success for Teens Mentoring Program, childhood cancer campaign and Alzheimer’s research.

▪ Carolina Community Actions is accepting enrollment in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program for 2015. Applicants must be ages 17-21 and meet the income guidelines to qualify. The program offers participants up to $5,000 in the following program services:

Assistance with obtaining a GED.

CNA training and assistance with tuition, books, uniform supplies and state exam fees.

Occupational training from a technical and occupational institution in the Tri-County.

Pharmacy tech internships.

Dental chairside assistant and office training.

Heavy equipment operator’s training.

Welding training.

Truck driving.

Incentives up to $300.

The program is paid for through the Catawba Regional Council of Government. CCA is a private, nonprofit corporation with a mission to promote self-reliance of low-income individuals and families by forming partnerships, which will provide a systematic reduction of the causes and conditions of poverty.

Volunteers

▪ The Rock Hill Youth Council is looking for youth volunteers who want to give an afternoon of service noon-4 p.m. March 28 as part of Rock Hill’s Youth Service Day. Groups such as school clubs, church youth groups, scouts and others are invited to participate.

Teams will gather at the Cherry Park Open Shelter at noon for a kick-off celebration with free food, music and free t-shirts. Volunteers will then go to project locations. Groups are responsible for organizing their own service project and should complete an application by March 25. ▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bath, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity and marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.
