A 19-year-old N.C. Central University student has been charged in a two-car collision last week that killed a fellow student from Greensboro.
Tariq Jacobs has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael announced Wednesday.
The accident took place on N.C. 55 near Crete Street about 6:35 p.m. last Tuesday, March 31. Jacobs, a sophomore hospitality and tourism major from Norfolk, Va., who plays on the NCCU football team, was driving south on N.C. 55 in a 2000 Honda Accord that crossed the center line and crashed into a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, Michael said.
The Cobalt slammed into the passenger side of the Accord. Jacobs’ passenger, Chekeria Renae Reid, 22, a senior who was a team manager on the football and women’s basketball teams, died at the scene.
Emergency workers transported Jacobs and Joshua Clark, the driver of the Cobalt, to the hospital, where they were treated for injuries not considered life threatening, Michael said.
Investigators think speed was a factor in the accident.
