Syracuse football recruiting: 3-star DT Christian Colon to announce commitment …

Syracuse, N.Y. — Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) High School defensive tackle Christian Colon will announce a verbal commitment on Thursday at 5 p.m., according to ESPN recruiting analyst Tom VanHaaren.

Colon, who named Syracuse to his top 6 in late May, is also considering Penn State, North Carolina, Maryland, UCLA and Pittsburgh.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Colon is rated three stars and the No. 53 defensive tackle in the Class of 2016, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. His offer sheet includes all the schools in his top 6, as well as Notre Dame, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Boston College, among others, per 247Sports.com.

Colon was previously planning to announce his commitment in early November, but it’s possible as the teams he’s considering add defensive tackles — like PSU nabbing Michael Dwumfour on Wednesday — he wants to ensure there’s an open scholarship at the program he favors.

Syracuse’s best selling point toward landing Colon is the pledge it received from four-star running back Robert Washington in late April.

Colon has known Washington since middle school and played with him on USA Football in eighth grade and at SouthLake Christian (Huntersville, N.C.) Academy as a freshman before transferring to Independence.

Colon said in late April that he’s heard from Washington and SU running backs coach DeAndre Smith, and that he can envision being part of Washington’s plan to bring Syracuse back into the national spotlight.

“I’m cool with it,” Colon said. “I’d do it. It’s just getting other players to do it. I’d love to do it. But at this time in my recruitment, I’m not ready to commit yet.”

The Orange has eight players verbally committed to it’s Class of 2016 and no defensive tackles.
