On Oct. 5, The Steel Magnolias from San Marcos, Texas, will present a fully choreographed concert of southern gospel music at Green Acres Baptist Church in Smyrna at 6:30 p.m. Admission for the event is free.
The Steel Magnolias will be on a 16-day fall tour through the northeast, and were invited by Green Acres Baptist Church Pastor, Iuveni Gutierrez, to make a stop in Georgia before they head to Canada, their farthest destination.
On this 16-day mission journey, The Steel Magnolias will open with a concert before all five sessions of the three-day Virginia Beach Gospel Music Festival in the first week of their tour. They have also been invited to sing at the Calhoun County Prison in Anniston, Alabama, where 63 inmates were baptized just five weeks ago.
In addition, they will present over 30 concerts in churches, performing arts centers and senior centers, plus “Flash Mobs” at Times Square, Niagara Falls, Billy Graham Library and Samaritan’s Purse Headquarters. They will cover 4300 miles through 15 states on this tour.
The group has traveled throughout the United States, most recently touring the southwest and into Colorado, singing 25 times which included a “Flash Mob” at the Grand Canyon, the Durango Train to Silverton and Carlsbad Caverns.
In December 2014, the ladies presented a total of 54 Christmas programs throughout central Texas, with 12 major programs in churches and banquet halls, plus 42 presentations called “Flash Mob Christmas Carolings.” They were received with open arms for these 10 minute presentations in restaurants, fast food eateries, grocery stores and courthouse squares delivering a Christmas spirit from Temple to San Antonio, Texas.
Over Memorial Day weekend, The Steel Magnolias helped with disaster relief in the 2015 Flood of the Blanco and San Marcos Rivers. The ladies helped “mud out,” tear down dry wall and do clean-up for several families in the community.
The following Sunday, alongside workers from Samaritan’s Purse of Boone, North Carolina, The Steel Magnolias sang some traditional Christian songs up and down the streets to many of the victims in the heaviest flooded areas of the city.
