A bill that would temporarily cut North Carolina’s gas tax by 2.5 cents and set the state’s minimum gas tax at 35 cents per gallon is advancing though the Senate and is expected to be heard by the House this week.

The bill would go into effect March 1, bringing the current 37.5-cents-per-gallon rate to 35 cents per gallon. The purpose of the bill is to stabilize revenue brought in by the gas tax, which fluctuates based on the price of fuel, to ensure the state has enough money to pay for highway and bridge projects.
