Mississippi flag’s Confederate emblem: Next to go?

Mississippi, in the heart of the Deep South, appears to be on the edge of a historic debate about its identity, and how the state presents itself to the rest of the world.

Hot on the heels of a racially charged massacre in South Carolina, prominent Republicans in Mississippi are raising their voices for the first time in favor of removing the Confederate emblem from the state’s flag.

Mississippi is the only state in the country to have the Confederate insignia embedded in its flag, long a source of pride for many Mississippians but also discomfort for some, who see it as a Civil War relic and a symbol of racism. On Monday evening, the Republican speaker of the state House, Philip Gunn, called for the removal of the Confederate emblem from the state flag.

“We must always remember our past, but that does not mean we must let it define us,” Speaker Gunn said in a statement. “As a Christian, I believe our state’s flag has become a point of offense that needs to be removed. We need to begin having conversations about changing Mississippi’s flag.”

In South Carolina, a Confederate flag flies on the state capitol grounds, but the symbol is not a part of the state flag. Monday afternoon, five days after a massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., Gov. Nikki Haley (R) called for the flag’s removal. The website of the young man charged with nine counts of murder, Dylann Roof, depicted him holding a Confederate flag and expressing white supremacist ideas, setting in motion efforts to remove the flag from its place of prominence in South Carolina’s capital.

In Mississippi, Gunn’s statement was the first by an elected Republican official calling for the insignia’s removal from the state flag. Henry Barbour, the national Republican committeemen from Mississippi, soon issued tweets in support.

As Mr. Barbour noted, Mississippi held a referendum in 2001 on whether to keep the Confederate insignia in its flag. State residents voted 2 to 1 to keep it, including Barbour, he said.

In South Carolina, after last week’s massacre, Governor Haley concluded it was time for change. She held a press conference, flanked by prominent South Carolina politicians of both parties, and called on the legislature to remove the flag from the capitol grounds.

In Mississippi, the issue of the state flag’s Confederate symbol has long been a source of discomfort for business leaders and the state’s large African American community. Some business leaders believe the symbol has held the state back economically, discouraging both investment and tourism.

But some prominent figures in the state reject the idea of altering the flag. On Saturday, after Mitt Romney called on South Carolina to remove its Confederate flag, Mississippi state Sen. Melanie Sojourner (R) slammed the GOP’s 2012 presidential nominee, calling his statement “an example of what is wrong with society today.”

“The flag was no more the ‘source’ of horrible acts against mankind than a gun is the ‘source’ of someone’s death. The ‘source’ is the hatred and evil that resides in the hearts of some who live and have lived among us,” wrote Senator Sojourner, who ran the unsuccessful 2014 United States Senate campaign of fellow state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

“We all have a responsibility to make certain that it is the ‘source’ we address and not place blame on something that alone could do no harm,” Sojourner continued. “Simply placing blame on something that some see as a symbol only perpetuates the problem.”

At time of writing, Sojourner had not reacted to Gunn’s statement.

In related news, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) announced Tuesday that he wants to phase out state-sponsored license plates that include an image of the Confederate flag, according to The Washington Post. Last week, the US Supreme Court ruled that Texas could reject a specialty license plate that includes the Confederate flag.

On Monday, Wal-Mart announced that its stores will no longer carry Confederate flag merchandise. Sears has followed suit.

Poll names Craggy Gardens ‘the most beautiful place’ in North Carolina

Thrillist online magazine, which has previously named Asheville one of America’s most hipster cities and one of America’s best drinking cities — among others, has now created a list of each state’s most beautiful destination.

“Every state (and/or Commonwealth!) has its own version of beauty,” reads the intro to the post, “which is why we polled residents and tourism boards from each to determine what that one must-hit (and must-Instagram) spot is.”

And despite a wide range of choices in North Carolina — from our Atlantic beaches to our stunning waterfalls and breathtaking views, the food, drink and travel blog’s poll turned up one winning Western North Carolina location: Craggy Gardens.

Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Craggy Gardens not only gives visitors and hikers a beautiful immediate view of the pinks, purples and whites of spring and summer blossoms — but also boasts some amazing mountaintop views of rolling, unspoiled landscape stretching to the horizon from every direction.

So, what do you think, Asheville? Does Craggy Gardens define N.C. beauty — or does another site come to mind?

Check out the rest of the list (and start planning your next road trip) here.

From Thrillist, about the N.C. pick:

Yes, there are some picturesque beaches on the Outer Banks, as well as lighthouses like the Cape Hatteras that are among the most visited in America. And the Smoky Mountains ain’t bad, either. But perhaps the single most scenic place in North Carolina is the gardens off the Blue Ridge Parkway, recognized by the state as a National Heritage Area. Here, wildflowers give way to exposed bald rocks and some of the most gorgeous mountain views in America.

Coastal Carolina to become first college basketball team to visit Cuba

Per NCAA rules, college basketball programs are allowed to take an overseas trip once every four years. While there are the on-court benefits of playing exhibitions against teams from other parts of the world and having ten practices before departure, the trips can also serve as an educational experience for the coaches and players. Coastal Carolina will be taking a trip this summer, and they’re headed to a country that has never hosted a college basketball program.

Tuesday morning Coastal Carolina announced that it will take a trip to Cuba in early August, arriving August 6 and staying until the 14th. Cliff Ellis’ team will play three games against Cuba’s national team, which will be in the midst of preparations for the FIBA America/Olympic qualifying tournament that’s scheduled to be played in Mexico from August 31 to September 12.

Coastal Carolina, which has appeared in each of the last two NCAA tournaments, returns four starters from a team that won 24 games a season ago led by guards Elijah Wilson and Shivaughn Wiggins.

“This foreign tour to Cuba is a great honor for our program as the United States begins to open its relationship with Cuba,” Ellis said in the release. “For us to be the first team to travel to Cuba is a testament to our success over the past several years. We will rely on NCAA tournament experiences to play competitive basketball against the Cuban’s top-notch national team.

“It is not only an opportunity to get additional time together as a team prior to opening the season, but also an immense educational experience for our student-athletes.”

Strained relations between the United States and Cuba have improved some of late, with a bill being introduced to Congress in mid-February to lift the trade embargo that existed between the two countries for decades. That move came on the heels of legislation that sought to loosen travel restrictions between the United States and Cuba.

Earlier this month the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) played an exhibition in Havana against Cuba’s national team, which is preparing for next month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Cosmos were the first American professional sports team to play in Cuba since 1999, when the Baltimore Orioles played the first of two exhibitions against the Cuban national team (the second was played in Baltimore).

Allegiant Air to add four routes from Fort Lauderdale

Allegiant Air plans to add four routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport starting in October.

On Oct. 1, the Las Vegas carrier will begin nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Portsmouth, N.H., followed by service to Akron-Canton, Ohio, on Oct. 2 and Rochester, N.Y., on Oct. 9.

New seasonal nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Rapids, Mich., will begin Dec. 16 and run through April, Allegiant said in a news release.

As of May, Allegiant served 11 markets from Fort Lauderdale including Asheville, N.C.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Columbus, Ohio, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Memphis, Tenn.

Allegiant has been in the news of late because of cancellations at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, some related to maintenance issues. The airline has canceled 14 flights leaving or arriving there since June 17, when an Allegiant plane made an emergency landing after a pressurization problem.

Allegiant also has been in a labor dispute with pilots. In May, a court blaocked the pilots’ union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1224, from striking,

Kent George, Broward County Aviation Department director of aviation, said he welcomed the additional flights to markets he considered underserved. Tourism officials also are enthusiastic about Allegiant’s Fort Lauderdale expansion.

“Allegiant Air has been a great partner to the destination, bringing thousands of visitors to our sun-kissed shores,” said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention Visitors Bureau.

To promote the new routes, Allegiant is offering fares from $69 to $99 one way. Purchases must be made by Friday at Allegiant.com for travel by Feb. 16. Seats are limited and not available on all flights.

For information and flight schedules, go to Allegiant.com.

North Carolina, Triangle outpace nation in tourism and travel spending

Tourists may not be spending as much in the rest of the nation. But that’s not the case in North Carolina, state tourism officials say.

According to figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, tourism and travel spending across the United States “decelerated” during the first quarter of 2015, growing at an annual rate of just 2 percent. That’s down from the 4.9 percent increase the nation saw in the final quarter of 2014.

BEA attributed the decline to reduced spending on food services and drinking places and “all other transportation-related commodities.”

Property Spotlight: North Hills Office Sublease Sponsor Listing

Meanwhile, North Carolina has seen no such slowdown. While figures that would allow an exact apples-to-apples comparison were not available, state tourism officials were able to provide data that showed the state is outperforming the national average in a number of ways.

Scott Peacock, a spokesman for Visit N.C., says this year, demand for hotel rooms in North Carolina was up 4.9 percent as of April, compared to the 3.8 percent increase the rest of the nation saw over the same period.

The North Central Region, which covers the Triangle area, was slightly ahead of the state average at 5 percent. That’s according to data collected by Smith Travel Research.

In Wake County, collections on hotel occupancy taxes and food and beverage taxes hit record highs for each month of the first quarter of 2015. In March, occupancy tax collections were up 10.1 percent year-over-year, bringing in $1.95 million in revenue. Food and beverage tax collections topped $2.1 million, marking a 15 percent increase.

Dennis Edwards, president and CEO of the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau, attributed the strong performance to a strong economy, which has driven an increase in corporate travel, attendance at sporting events and leisure tourism.

It’s official: NBA all-stars in Charlotte in 2017

Most Popular

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed the worst-kept secret in Charlotte on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena: The uptown arena will be home to the league’s 2017 all-star game.

All it took to bring the NBA’s midseason showcase here for the first time since 1991 was a promised $40 million facelift for the 10-year-old arena, an endorsement by Hall of Famer and Charlotte Hornets majority owner Michael Jordan and a months-long recruiting process that involved CEOs, elected officials and tourism executives.

“It is my pleasure to announce that Charlotte is going to host the 2017 NBA All-Star Game,” Silver said, standing on a stage in the arena atrium with Jordan, N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory, Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter, Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chairman Trevor Fuller and Hornets President Fred Whitfield seated nearby.

Lake Norman Waterfront Home Sponsor Listing

The main events of the all-star week will be held Feb. 17-19 in and around uptown.

Last year, City Council approved spending $34 million of taxpayer money for upgrades to the arena, including a new main scoreboard, lighting upgrades and other improvements. The Hornets are kicking in $6 million for renovated suites and locker rooms.

The $265 million arena is owned by the city but managed by the Hornets. Jordan, who played in the 1991 all-star game at Charlotte Coliseum, called the successful bid to stage the week of NBA exhibitions, fan festivals, civic projects, parties and panel discussions a privilege — and a sign of how far the organization has rebounded since he took over as majority owner in 2010 from Robert Johnson.

“It’s been a busy five years,” Jordan said. “… We took a long fall (as an NBA city). This is our passage back to the top. … I had to crack the whip (to get the franchise into better shape).”

Upcoming Events

Recent all-star host cities generated $100 million for hotels, restaurants and other businesses visited by fans, sponsors, players and executives. Charlotte officials predict a similar pattern here, estimating the likely spending will add $100 million to the local economy. In 2012, the Democratic National Convention contributed $164 million in visitor spending in Charlotte, according to a city-backed study.

In New Orleans, home of the 2014 all-star game, direct spending totaled $60 million, according to a locally commissioned analysis. Silver, the commissioner, mentioned a number of spinoff events tied to the all-star game, including 100 clinics staged in New York in February (20 clinics for each of the five boroughs) during the 2015 all-star weekend.

The main events are the all-star game (Feb. 19), pitting the best players from the Eastern Conference against those from the Western Conference. Consider the likes of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and James Harden as all but certain participants.

All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 18, like the game itself, will be held at the uptown arena and feature NBA and WNBA players in a shooting stars exhibition, a skills challenge, the three-point contest and the slam-dunk competition. On Feb. 17, a rising stars matchup (U.S. versus the world) features NBA rookies and second-year players.

All-Star practice, a celebrity game and the NBA Developmental League All-Star Game will also be staged in Charlotte at Bojangles’ Coliseum the same week. The convention center uptown will stage the league fan festival. In addition to the players selected for the main all-star game, an additional 70 active players and 100 former players attended and participated in various events around the 2015 all-star week in New York, Silver said.

Whitfield, Hornets president, and Pete Guelli, chief sales officer for the team, credited Novant Health, a major sponsor of the Hornets, with an unspecified financial commitment to lead the local organizing committee and carry the bid forward.

McCrory, a former Charlotte mayor who was in office here when the city lost the original Hornets franchise in 2002, recalled the disappointment of losing the NBA and the collaboration to win an expansion franchise a year later. That second team, known as the Bobcats, floundered on the court and at the box office even into Jordan’s early years as majority owner.

Jordan bought controlling interest in 2010, but struggles continued. In 2013, NBA owners approved his request to reclaim the Hornets name after New Orleans (where the original Charlotte franchise moved in 2002) became the Pelicans. The switch took effect last season and, boosted by a yearlong promotional campaign, helped push the franchise into profitability while boosting attendance and increasing sponsor revenue by 20 percent.

Mike Boykin, co-founder of Bespoke Sports Entertainment, told me Tuesday the all-star week has grown exponentially since Charlotte staged the game 24 years ago. Celebrities flock to the various events, as do the executives from the major companies that back the league.

Clodfelter, Charlotte’s mayor, called the all-star week a chance to make a major impression with visiting CEOs and with viewers across the country and around the world. Cable network TNT broadcasts the game and the related competitions and exhibitions over the weekend.

Charlotte has a growing calendar of notable sporting events in the pipeline. Also in 2017, Quail Hollow Club hosts the PGA Championship, the first time the city will be home to a golf major. The NCAA men’s basketball tournament returns in 2018, followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournament in 2019. West Virginia and Tennessee will play a Labor Day weekend college football game at Bank of America Stadium in 2018 and the Belk Bowl and ACC football championship are committed through 2019.

Demand for hotel rooms on the rise

— Demand for hotel rooms in Hillsborough County is outstripping availability, allowing the lodging industry to raise rates, but retain good occupancy numbers, according to Visit Tampa Bay, the company that promotes the county as a tourist and convention destination.

Revenue per available hotel room is up 13.3 percent, on average, since January, according to new data released to Visit Tampa Bay by STR Inc. (formerly Smith Travel Research). Hillsborough County, for the first time, is ahead in the revenue measure of all 10 destinations it competes with for both convention business and vacationers, the data shows.

STR statistics show that Hillsborough County room rates sit right in the middle of its competitive set. The average room price here is $118.13, compared with $106 a night in May and $104 a year ago. That compares with Orlando at $118.51 and Fort Lauderdale at $157.77, Visit Tampa Bay reported.

When looking at revenue per available room, Hillsborough County leads its competitors, which include Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, North Carolina, Nashville, Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth, as well as Milwaukee, Baltimore and Long Beach.

“This is great news for hotel operators in Tampa and Hillsborough County,” said Santiago Corrada, president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay.

“It’s a testament to the work of Visit Tampa Bay and our partners that our hotels are producing more revenue and profitability than ever,” Corrada said. “And yet, Tampa Bay remains extremely affordable in terms of rates, which shows the potential we still have as a tourism destination.”

Total revenues for hotels in 2015 are just shy of $300 million, more than 14 percent above the same time last year. County hotel occupancy for the year is 79.2 percent, nearly equal to Orlando (80.4 percent) and slightly behind Fort Lauderdale (84.6 percent).

Since Oct. 1, according to Visit Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County has collected $18.2 million in bed taxes, more than 14 percent above the same period last year.

Prep notebook: Smith adds golf coach to list of jobs at Conway

Ashley Smith continues to add more responsibility at Conway.

That’s just the way he likes it.

Already known as the radio voice of the Tigers’ football team, Smith was instrumental in the building of the school’s athletics website that, among other things, lays out schedules for various teams and tracks most of the football records and accomplishments. Now, Smith will also be the boys and girls golf coach.

“It was an opportunity for me to be a head coach,” Smith said. “I coached middle school football last year. It just seemed right.”

He’ll be following in his father’s footsteps.

Bill Smith was the head golf coach and an assistant with the football program from 1983-1990. Ashley Smith graduated from the school in 1988, initially went to North Greenville to play football and then transferred to Coastal Carolina, where he graduated.

He’s worked for the city and for Horry County Schools as the technology teacher at Conway Elementary. And he’s no stranger to the game of golf, either.

For the last six years, Smith has served as the director of the Horry County chapter of the South Carolina Junior Golf Association. He recently orchestrated a tie-in with Shaftesbury Glen Golf and Fish Club and intends to continue that merger with the Conway High golf teams.

In his words, it could make the team more attractive to younger players and help boost numbers desperately needed to compete with the area’s best golf programs. The Tigers’ boys team hasn’t been to the state teams finals since the early 1990s. The girls squad has never qualified since the sport became sanctioned in 1999.

“At the first girls meeting, we had four show up, and they were all juniors,” Smith said. “You need to find a way to replenish that. We’re going to build that program up – that’s the goal.”

In case his multiple roles didn’t put enough on his plate, Smith also intends to run for Conway City Council in November. He has a tourism-heavy platform, one that no doubt could feed off his golf ties.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid,” Smith said. “I like to stay busy. This is another way to serve my city.”

Around high school football

The final players across the country who qualified for Nike’s elite The Opening Finals camp in Oregon next month have been added to the roster.

Conway’s Bryan Edwards will be one of just two rising seniors from South Carolina on the team rosters, which are being released this week. Edwards qualified via the Charlotte, N.C., regional that took place May 9.

The University of South Carolina commit will compete with 165 others players from across the country in Eugene, Ore., July 7-10.

On Saturday, Myrtle Beach’s Drayton Arnold was rated by the recruiting service Scout as the top quarterback in the state. Arnold, who is verbally committed to Old Dominion, threw for 2,884 yards and 37 touchdowns in 10 1/2 games last fall after leading Myrtle Beach to a state championship in 2013.

Coach Mickey Wilson’s team is considered one of the early favorites to win the Class AAA title this coming season.

College signing

Socastee softball player Savannah Talley has signed to continue her career at NCAA Division II Francis Marion.

Talley, who graduated last month, played second base and pitched for the Braves. She batted .298 this spring with four doubles, three triples, a home run and seven RBIs while also recording a fielding percentage of .955.

As a sophomore, Talley was a prime piece of the team that won the Region VII-AAA title and advanced to the Lower State tournament for the first time since 2007.

She’ll join former Socastee teammate Madison Lowe-Garnder on the Patriots’ roster. Aynor’s Shelby Cox also signed with Francis Marion in November.

That’s a wrap

On Saturday, the final South Carolina High School League action of the 2014-2015 season will take place with the Clash of the Carolinas boys and girls soccer all-star games.

St. James senior forward Quadarius Grate was the lone area player selected for either game, to be played at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island outside Charleston.

The girls contest will begin at noon, and the boys game will follow at approximately 2:15 p.m. Tickets for the games are $10, and each ticket includes admission to Saturday night’s Charleston Battery game against the Harrisburg City Islanders.

The 2015-2016 academic calendar then begins July 1.
