Community News from York, Chester and Lancaster counties: Oct. 1, 2015

Kings Mountain National Military Park will commemorate the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain Saturday and Sunday with the Backcountry Militia and the Craven County Militia Company recreating the activities of an 18th-century military encampment as part of the activities.

The encampment will feature military drills along with musket and rifle firing. The group will perform other camp activities such as cooking, basket weaving, and bullet and button molding. There will also be Ferguson Rifle demonstrations as well as programs on 18th century medicine.

On Saturday, the Guilford Courthouse Fife and Drum Corps of Greensboro, N.C., will perform throughout the day. From 11 a.m.-3 p.m., young people can participate in colonial activities with park staff and re-enactors. Members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association will hold a storytelling session at 3 p.m.

Candlelight tours of the battlefield begin at 7 p.m. Sunday led by park staff and re-enactors. Bring a flashlight. Reservations are required. Call 864-936-7921.

Ceremonies commemorating the anniversary begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 7 with a wreath laying ceremony at the U.S. Monument. At 3 p.m. the Overmountain marchers arrive at the park amphitheater as they end the recreation of the march made by the patriot forces to the Battle of Kings Mountain. A special ceremony will follow the arrival of the marchers.

▪ Sam Kean, a New York Times best-selling author, will speak at 6 p.m. Monday in Tuttle Dining Room in McBryde Hall at Winthrop University. His books, “The Disappearing Spoon” and “The Violinist’s Thumb,” were both named Amazon Top 5 science books of the year. “The Disappearing Spoon” was nominated by the Royal Society for one of the top science books of 2010. ▪ The Turning Point of Chester 2015 annual banquet will be 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at First Church of the Nazarene, 182 Pinckney St. Alfred Williams, assistant principal at Chester High School, will speak. ▪ Lando Days celebration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in Lando. The event features a classic car show, bake sale, train rides, children’s zone, live music, food, raffles and door prizes.

Fundraisers

▪ Family and friends of the 178th Engineer Battalion will host a yard and bake sale, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the National Guard Armory, 126 Airport Road, Rock Hill. Donations can be dropped off 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday. For help getting donations to the Armory, call Leanne Pressley at 803-371-0911. Proceeds will go to the Family Readiness Group to assist families in need during the holidays.

▪ The Kings Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will have a yard sale, 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at 218 E. Jefferson St., York. Cancel if rain. Proceeds go to chapter projects.

▪ Rock Hill Adult Enrichment Center High Five Club will have its annual Mums and Pumpkin Fundraiser, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at 359 Park Ave. Hot dogs, chips and baked goods will be available.

▪ Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene will host a craft bazaar, 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the church, 998 Dunlap Roddey Road, Rock Hill. The bazaar includes more than 30 vendors, door prizes, lemonade stand, bake sale and breakfast vendor. For information, call Jessica at 803-242-2998.

▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation Tourism hosts its Friday Lunch Stop with live music, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Black Street parking lot. The event runs each Friday through Oct. 30. Greg Lilley performs Friday with originals and covers. Some seating available. Bring chairs or blankets.

▪ DECARLO will headline First Friday in Fort Mill, 6-9 p.m. Oct. 2 at Walter Elisha Park. The event includes food trucks, beer, wine and coffee. For information, go to firstfridayfortmill.com.

Meetings

▪ The local TPA of America Post K will meet 7 p.m. Thursday at Pier 51, Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. The community service organization sponsors children’s safety programs and a hearing-impaired scholarship program. For information, call Phyllis at 803-328-1654.

Classes

▪ St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rock Hill will offer Country/Texas Two-Step dance classes taught by Bill and April Bragg, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays in October. Cost is $20 a person for four sessions. Beginner waltz will be 7:30-8:30 p.m. Nov, 2, 9, 16. Cost is $15 a person for three sessions. Proceeds will go to the youth of the church. ▪ The National Alliance on Mental Illness will offer free 15-hour education courses for parents of children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional challenges. Classes will be 6:15-8:45 p.m. for six consecutive Mondays starting Oct. 5 at Piedmont Medical Center in the Doctor’s Dining Room; and 6:15-8:45 p.m. for six consecutive Tuesdays starting Oct. 6 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Conference room A, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill. Volunteers

▪ Bethel United Methodist Church will open its Men’s Warming Center in November at 1232 Curtis St., Rock Hill. The center opens around Nov. 15 and closes the middle of March. Volunteers are needed to help run the center. For information, call 803-327 4881.
