Roberts tapped for second term state board

Mount Airy Tourism Development Authority Director Jessica Icenhour Roberts to the North Carolina Travel and Tourism Board by North Caroloina House of Rep. Speaker Thom Tillis.

Roberts, director of Tourism Marketing of the Mount Airy Tourism Development Authority, was appointed in May 2013 for her first term which expires this month. She will serve again for the two-year term until Dec. 31, 2016.

“Thank you for-your willingness to serve in this capacity,” wrote Tillis in the official letter announcing the appointment. “I am confident you will have much to offer to the North Carolina Travel and Tourism Board and will be effective and diligent in your servicc to our State.”

As the director of Tourism Marketing, Roberts leads the efforts of the Mount Airy Tourism Development Authority and the Tourism Partnership of Surry County, which serves as the official destination marketing organization representing Mount Airy, Elkin, Dobson, Pilot Mountain and all of Surry County.

She also oversees the staffing and operations of Mount Airy Visitor Center on Main Street that shares space with the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce. Roberts has been employed with the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce and TDA since July 2004. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelors of Science with a Concentration in Destination Management and Business. Roberts also obtained a Certification as a Travel Marketing Professional by the Southeast Tourism Society in 2019. (TMP)

Roberts also serves on the boards of the Piedmont Triad Film Commission, North Carolina Travel Industry Association, Destination Marketing Association of North Carolina, Piedmont Triad Host Group, and holds professional memberships in Southeast Tourism Society, Blue Ridge Parkway Association and various other organizations.

The mission of the North Carolina Tourism Board is to advocate for the sound development of the state’s travel and tourism industry. Created in 1991, the board advises the Secretary of Commerce on policy matters related to tourism promotion in North Carolina.

Among other duties, the board recommends programs that will promote the state as a travel and tourism destination; advises the Secretary on the effectiveness of agencies contracting with the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development; and promotes the exchange of ideas and information on travel and tourism between state and local government agencies, private organization and individuals.
