Syracuse, N.Y. — Each morning leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 4, my Syracuse.com colleague Nate Mink and I will take a look at one of Syracuse football’s verbal commitments for the Class of 2015.
Thus far we’ve covered St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) High School linemen Colin Byrne and Sam Clausman. Today we stay in the trenches with Cody Conway.
The basics
Name: Cody Conway
Position: Offensive tackle
Height: 6 feet, 6 inches
Weight: 280 pounds
High School: Plainfield (Ill.) North High School
Twitter: @CodyConway13
Commitment breakdown
Conway, a three-star product, pledged to the Orange on the same day as Byrne and Clausman. A visit in the spring opened his eyes to the program and a phone call to primary recruiter Tim Lester made his verbal commitment official on May 19.
Conway also holds offers from Illinois, Western Michigan, Rutgers and Buffalo, according to 247Sports.com. He said in a previous interview that he also received interest from North Carolina and Northwestern.
Film Watch
Here is Conway’s senior highlight tape:
Conway plays both ways for Plainfield North, manning the left tackle position on offense and lining up at defensive end when the opponent has possession. He locks into blocks well, but also shows the ability to shed the initial defender and get to the second level. And while he doesn’t appear quite as animated as Byrne and Clausman, his footwork is clean and motor apparent. Not having to worry about playing defense can only help Conway at the next level.
Odds and ends
- He is tied with OT Evan Adams as tallest player in the class
- Conway told Syracuse.com after his commitment that the SU coaching staff informed that he was the top offensive tackle on its board.
- Conway will take his official visit to Syracuse on the weekend of Jan. 23.
Impact
Conway will have the opportunity to make an impression early in his career — something he valued while looking at schools — but probably not in his first season. While Sean Hickey is off to the NFL, the Orange returns Ivan Foy, Omari Palmer and Michael Lasker, all of whom saw time last season,. Redshirt freshman Jamar McGloster and true freshman Denzel Ward, another Chicago-area talent, are also in the mix heading into camp.
However, with Foy and guards Nick Robinson and Rob Trudo wrapping up their eligibility at the end of next season, playing time should be ripe for the taking in 2016.
