zMax Dragway Boosts Cabarrus County Economy

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — The need for speed drew thousands to Concord from forty-eight states and twelve different countries.

It is the only drag race with four lanes and four race cars speeding by at the same time.

That is a big draw for race fans and it is huge for Cabarrus County.

“You can experience racing any type of racing at many different destinations across the US, but what makes us unique is we’re where the drivers live, we’re where the teams live,” said Donna Carpenter, of the Cabarrus County Convention Center.

Carpenter said tourism adds about 4,000 jobs and millions of dollars to Cabarrus County, and it is not just from this race.

“Maybe next time they come they’ll stay a little bit longer and do something else while they’re here,” said Carpenter.

Earl Redden, who came from Maryland, is one of many visitors giving that extra boost to the local economy.

“There’s no other race like this in the world. Some of these cars can go faster than 300 miles per hour. And it’s that speed that brings so many people to Concord,” said Redden.
